Exchanging Habits

As advisers to many successful families, we come to observe the inner life workings of clients who range in age, background, careers, and levels of wealth. As a result, we get a good view of people and their habits. Over time, you learn that a person’s daily habits compound to determine much of the results we observe in their life. Yes, luck plays a part, but luck would have no impact without habits.

Replacing Bad With Good

Over time, we all develop, collect, and inherit various habits. Some of these are beneficial, helping us reach our goals, while others hinder us.

Some people are doomed to entire lives of bad habits compounding into poor results across all three spheres of mental, physical and financial health. However, a key mindset of all successful people is that they understand that their current habits are not for life. By living intentionally, you can exchange a bad habit for a better one!

For example, consider the habit of some high-spenders who buy shiny and useless things to keep up with their neighbours. Often, when these people enter their forties, their priorities shift, and they seek more meaningful pursuits. They begin to save more and spend less, realising the importance of freedom and independence. By the time they retire, they are far ahead of where they thought they would be because they swapped bad habits for better ones over time.

Swapping ad hoc investment contributions for regular monthly contributions, ignoring short-term market news and reading more books, and giving up buying more unnecessary possessions so that you can have more meaningful experiences with friends are other examples of good financial habit exchanges.

As we begin to exchange bad habits for good habits, we find that the compounding effects are much greater than expected. In the habit arena, one plus one is not two but exponentially more. Some of our clients become so good at exchanging bad habits for good habits that their previous life and way of operating seem alien.

A Life of Intention

When we aim to improve our lives, we often start with a list of goals we want to achieve. However, the path from our daily actions to these desired outcomes is sometimes unclear. To ensure success, we must plan the steps needed to reach our goals.

Successful people know that it’s their habits that move them in the direction of their goals. We are habit-forming beasts; to succeed in any area, we must exchange bad habits for good ones.

For those who are brave enough to take a moment to think deeply about where their lives are headed and have the dedication to replace their current negative habits with more beneficial ones, a brighter and more rewarding future is inevitable.

What bad habits can you exchange for better ones in the coming months? What impact might this decision have on your life a decade from now? A meaningful life is within reach for anyone who can recognise their potential and commit to making positive changes. With the right attitude and dedication, a more fulfilling life awaits.
